TWPS Newsletter No.5 2026

2nd April 2026

Term 1 Week 10 Information 2026

As we finish Term 1, it is a fabulous opportunity to reflect on what has been a strong and productive start to the 2026 school year. It has been pleasing to see students across all year levels actively involved and committed to their learning.

Mr Crotti and I would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our staff. Their commitment, professionalism, and ability to adapt in a busy and evolving term have ensured that all students have remained supported and engaged.

We also thank our parents and carers for the role you play in supporting your child’s learning and wellbeing. A special acknowledgement goes to our Fundraising Team for their work in coordinating the Icy Pole sales, Hot Cross Bun sales and Easter Egg raffle. When schools and families work together with a shared focus, students benefit both academically and socially. Your children are more likely to stay engaged, build positive relationships, and experience success in their learning.

Strong partnerships allow us to respond more effectively to student needs and strengthen overall outcomes. This is clearly reflected in the success of our partnership with Thomastown Neighbourhood House (THN). Through this collaboration, we have been able to provide additional support, connection and opportunities for our families, strengthening our sense of community and ensuring that every child is supported to thrive both at school and within our Thomastown neighbourhood.

Thank you to our families, staff and students for your organisation and support in making our Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences run so smoothly. Many parents and carers shared how proud they are of their children’s efforts and progress. We feel the same way and are really proud of our students for all the effort they’ve put in this term.

Our Prep students have now completed their first term at school, and they have done an incredible job. Our Prep students settled into school life with relative ease, our local pre-school teachers should be very proud of how well they have prepared the children for school life.

2027 Prep enrolments will be opened at the beginning of next term. If you have a child (or know a child) who will turn 5 before April 30 next year, please access our enrolment documents on our web page for further information. School Tours will be hosted next term. Please contact the school for further information on 9465 4317.

Student Leadership
At our whole school assembly, we proudly presented leadership badges to our Student Voice Team, Student Representative Council, and Year 6 Class Captains. Congratulations to all of our student leaders.

Ms Milly Taylor will be supporting the Student Representative Council this year, and Mrs Santiglia is looking forward to leading the Student Voice Team.

Chess Awards
Congratulations to the following Junior School students who demonstrated outstanding commitment, growth, and positive character during Chess this term. Their efforts reflect not only developing strategic thinking, but also perseverance, focus, and respect for others.

Most Improved: Zayn
Recognised for significant growth in skill, confidence, and game understanding.

Encouragement Award: Gertrude
Awarded for consistent effort, willingness to learn, and a positive attitude.

Sportsmanship Award: Massimo
Commended for fairness, respect, and exemplary behaviour towards peers during play.

It has been a  strong effort from all students involved in Chess Club this term! It has been excellent to see both skill development and character on display throughout the term.

Working with Children Check (WWCC)
All parent helpers at Thomastown West Primary School must hold a valid Working with Children Check. The upcoming school holidays are a great time to organise this.

Volunteer checks are free. You can apply online at:
https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/individuals/applicants/how-to-apply-1

If you have a valid working with check and have yet to provide it to the school, please email a copy or come into the office and we will take a copy.

FRIENDLY REMINDER

ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR THEIR SCHOOL HATS WHEN OUTSIDE

UNTIL THE END OF APRIL.

If your child has lost their hat, they can be purchased
at the office for $14.

The SunSmart program is dedicated to reducing skin cancer incidence, illness and mortality through a targeted prevention and early detection program.

The objectives of the SunSmart Program is:

  1. Improve and monitor skin cancer prevention awareness, knowledge, attitudes and behaviour
  2. Support priority populations to detect cancers earlier.
  3. Advocate for strategies that aim to reduce the health and economic burdens of skin cancer.

Thomastown West Primary School recommends that from September 1st to end of April, and whenever UV levels reach 3 and above, students come to school wearing sun-protective clothing such as:

  • loose, cool, closely-woven fabric
  • shirts with a collar and/or high necklines
  • tops with elbow length or long sleeves
  • longer style shorts and skirts
  • a wide brim hat/ bucket or legionnaire style hat to be worn in September 1st to the end of April

For the best protection use all five forms of sun protection-clothing, sunscreen, a broad brim hat, shade and sunglasses-when the UV is 3 and above.

School Uniform
Please take time during the school holidays to check the wardrobes and see what school uniform needs replacing.

Our School Uniform is important because it:
  • fosters a sense of community and belonging and encourages students to develop pride in their appearance and our school
  • supports Thomastown West Primary School’s commitment to ensuring that our students feel equal and are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities
  • reduces student competition based on clothing
  • ensures our student dress code aligns with Department of Education Sun Smart requirements
  • enhances the profile and identity of the school and its students within the wider community.

ANZAC Day
Our SRC leaders will be presenting a thoughtful ANZAC Day presentation to classes on Monday 27 April, and again at our first whole school assembly on Friday 1 May. This is an important opportunity for our students to learn about and reflect on the courage, sacrifice and service of those who have served our country.

Term 2 Begins Monday 20th April at 8:45am.
Our whole school Term 2 goal is for all students to arrive on time, ready to learn, at 8:45am.

As we head into the holidays, we encourage families to support children in maintaining healthy routines and making safe choices. This includes monitoring online activity and ensuring safe use of technology, keeping consistent sleep routines, and encouraging regular physical activity. It is also important that students continue to demonstrate our school values by showing kindness, respect and responsibility in the community. These habits help children return to school settled, safe and ready to learn.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday!

Wellbeing Term 1 Week 10

Resting and Recharging for the Term Break

Hello Families,

Congratulations to all our students for successfully navigating Term 1! As we head into the break, our Wellbeing Team wanted to share a few thoughts on how to support your child’s recovery over the next two weeks.

After the intensity of a long first term, many students enter a "decompression" phase. They might seem more tired or withdrawn than usual—this is a natural part of processing the term's demands. To help them truly recharge, we recommend focusing on active recovery:

  1. Prioritise Sleep: Establishing a consistent bedtime is the foundation for a healthy mood and better focus.
  2. Embrace "Down Time": While it's tempting to fill the break with activities, leaving blocks of time for unstructured play or relaxation helps reduce mental clutter.
  3. Connection Over Correction: Use this time to engage in low-pressure activities together—like a walk or a movie night—focusing on connection rather than academic performance.
  4. Digital Detox: Gently encourage periods of time away from screens to help reset their focus and improve mood.

Wishing all our families a safe, restful, and restorative break. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed for Term 2!

The Wellbeing Team

Local Activities in Thomastown

If you are looking for low-cost ways to stay active and connected in our local area, here are some great options:

  • TRAC Thomastown Leisure Centre: Dive into their April holiday program featuring pool inflatables, mini Olympics, and splash park games.
  • Thomastown Library: Keep an eye out for school holiday workshops, including their popular "Indigenous Hip Hop" sessions and movie afternoons.
  • Main Street Recreation Reserve: A great local spot for a casual kick of the footy or a family walk along the creek trails.
  • Playshed Cafe Thomastown: A local indoor option for younger children to burn off energy while parents enjoy a coffee.
  • Thomastown Neighbourhood House: Check in for local community pop-ups and their holiday "coffee van" sessions.

Office Monitors

Our office monitors continue to play an important role in supporting daily routines and assisting with front office tasks. These Grade 6 students demonstrate responsibility and pride, and their contribution benefits both staff and peers. As many of our monitors are new to the role, they are learning valuable skills in communication, organisation and leadership. We ask for your patience and encouragement as they grow in confidence and capability. We greatly appreciate their efforts and the positive way they represent our school community.

Every day of learning really does count!

At TWPS we want every child to achieve their full potential and we know that parents share this goal. There is a clear link between good attendance and educational achievement. If your child is not in school, on time, as often as possible they will be missing out on many important parts of their
education.

Why is regular attendance at school important?

Regular school attendance will mean that your child has a better chance in life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day...

*they learn better
*they make friends
*they are happier
*they have a brighter future

If your child is sick, of course it is appropriate to keep your child at home but

other ‘days off’ school add up to lost learning.  See below:

Fundraising Term 1 Week 10 2026

We are delighted to share the wonderful success of our fundraising efforts this term. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we raised over $800 from the Easter raffle and more than $100 from the hot cross bun sales. These achievements would not have been possible without the generosity and enthusiasm of our parents, carers, and staff—thank you all for your contributions.

Congratulations to all those who won a prize in the raffle at this morning’s assembly, enjoy your Easter goodies!

We would also like to extend a very special thank you to our dedicated parent helpers who generously give their time and energy to support these events. Your ongoing commitment makes a significant difference, and without your help, these fundraisers simply wouldn’t be possible.

Looking ahead to next term, there will be more fundraising activities coming up, so keep an eye out for ways to get involved and support our school!

Ildiko’s Beautiful Artwork

We’re so grateful to local artist Ildiko for sharing her talent with Thomastown Neighbourhood House. Her beautiful artwork on our Community Coffee Van is inspired by our home at 112 Main Street — featuring the flowering gums and cheeky lorikeets we often see on sunny days. Ildiko is also part of the team at Lalor Neighbourhood House — a “sister” NH whose vibrant community artwork continues to inspire us.

Pop in for a coffee and take a look — our Community Coffee Van is open Monday to Friday, 9am–12pm!

Our New Native Bush Garden

We’re excited to share our new Native Bush Garden, generously donated by the Community Team from Bunnings Thomastown, who provided plants, soil, mulch, and gardening tools. Our All Seasons participants (young adults living with a disability) rolled up their sleeves in a fantastic working bee, planting flowering bushes along the front fence. These plants will add beauty, privacy, and a safer space for families and program participants.

A HUGE thank you to Belinda, Mary, and the whole Bunnings Thomastown Team!

Kindergarten

Four-year-old Kindergarten is becoming Pre-Prep

Four-year-old Kindergarten is gradually transitioning from 15 to 30 hours each week across Victoria. Programs will continue to be play-based and led by a qualified teacher.

Pre-Prep will gradually roll out across the state, beginning in Whittlesea in 2026. The staged schedule allows time to grow the workforce, build the infrastructure, and provide services to prepare for expanded programs. If you would like to know more about this State Government Initiative, please visit the Victorian Government website.

Pre-Prep roll-out

From 2026, between 16 and 25 hours of Pre-Prep will be available statewide to:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
  • Children from a refugee or asylum seeker background
  • Children who have had contact with Child Protection services
  • Children supported by Early Start Kindergarten or Access to Early Learning in their Three-Year-old Kindergarten year.

If you think your child meets one of the eligibility criteria for Pre-Prep, talk to us about what the program may look like for your child in 2026. Hours will vary depending on the kindergarten you choose.

Increasing the hours of play-based learning in the year before school gives children even greater access to the many benefits of early childhood education.
