School Profile

Thomastown West Primary School was established in 1971 and is located approximately 20 kilometres north of the CBD. The school site is adjacent to Thomastown Secondary College and the schools share some sports facilities and a joint car park.

The school services a multicultural commun ity. This profile has remained constant for the past five years. In 2008 school enrolments were 390 students with Prep enrolments fluctuating between 40 and 60 students in the period of the last school charter. In past years exit students have tended to move on to the neighbouring secondary college but an increasing proportion is seeking alternate settings.

The school staff is currently 38, many of whom are part time. Thirty one are teachers (five of whom are male). The seven non teaching staff includes three office staff and four integration aides. The school also employs a Primary Welfare Officer. Additional staff includes four in the canteen and three in the Out of School Hours program.

The leadership team comprises a full time Principal, an Assistant Principal and four Leading teachers – Numeracy, Literacy, ICT and Specialist Programs.

The school is currently involved in a regional school improvement project – the Achievement Improvement Zone under the leadership of Professor David Hopkins. The school has begun discussions with neighbouring schools on the issue of re-generation of education facilities in the Thomastown and Lalor areas as part of the South Whittlesea Regeneration project.

The Welfare Officer coordinates a breakfast program for a significant number of students who otherwise could come to school without any nourishment.
