Welcome to the Thomastown West Primary School Website.

It is our aim that together we will be working on pathways to success for your child.  Our staff work very hard to assist children become  literate (reading/writing), numerate (maths) and curious about the world.

Thomastown West Primary School was established in 1971 and is located approximately 20 kilometres north of the CBD. The school site is adjacent to Thomastown Secondary College and the schools share some sports facilities and a joint car park.

The school services a ‘working class multicultural’ community. We have over 20 nationalities represented in our school community.  This profile has remained constant for the past five years. In 2010 school enrollments are about 345 students.

The school staff is currently 37, many of whom are part time. Thirty are teachers (three of whom are male). The seven non teaching staff includes three office staff and four integration aides.  Additional staff includes four in the canteen and three in the Out of School Hours program.

Our school curriculum has a major focus on Literacy and Numeracy.  Each day 2 hours of Literacy is taught and 5 hours of numeracy every week.  Our specialist  include: Science, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Physical Education and Computer classes (called ICT).

For students who require extra assistance, we offer programs such as Reading Recovery and Literacy Support. In 2010 we hope to start an Oral Language program for students where English is their second language and who need some assistance.

We also offer programs that extend and enhance student's abilities. We will continue to offer the Maths Olympiad program.  We also have specialised music programs such as instrumental lessons, choir and a school band.

The future is very exciting for us.  In 2010 we hope to start the first stage of construction for our new school. This is a joint project which is funded by both State and Federal governments.  It is also part of the Main Street Precinct Plan.  The Main Street Precinct involves: our Primary School, Maternal Health Centre, Kindergarten, Secondary School, Recreation facilities (including a public swimming pool) and the Thomastown Public Library.

If you would like to come and visit, please feel free to make a time.  I am very happy to discuss any aspect of our school and educational program with you.

I hope to speak with you soon.
